About

M Putt Sailmakers was founded in 1969 by Mike Putt.

He learnt the trade of sailmaking working as an apprentice in the Royal Docks in East London, eventually becoming a Master Sailmaker.

During this time he was fortunate enough to work on board many of the famous ships visiting these then bustling docks.

He went on to become Production Manager of William Smiths, then the largest manufacturer of flags and tents in the world, before starting his own business.

Over the years he has worked on HMS Victory , The Cutty Sark, HMS Belfast, HMS Warrior, HMS Gannet, The Gypsy Moth and manufactured many items for the Imperial War Museum, The National Maritime Museum and The Historic Dockyards at Chatham.

Since Mikes retirement in 2016 the company is now run by his eldest son Ian who has been working and learning from him for nearly 40 years.
